It’s been a while but here’s the smackdown - A new three track EP is written and rough demos have been recorded when we’ve been rehearsing the little buggers in a studio. We say little because they’re shorter and spiker than usual - Gone are the days of seven minute epics, this is a new sound. The sound of an austere Britain.

We’ve also added both EPs in their entirety to the WBW Soundcloud page, as well as some “b-sides” and rarities. Talking of which, here’s an as yet unreleased remix of one of our oldies ‘Distant Signal’. It was done by ambient music svengali ‘Cato Six’ and is rather good. You can hear Aaron’s voice every now and again sounding as dour us usual!

This masks of course the serious business of rehearsing and writing which we had another successful session of yesterday, albeit sadly missing OW. i’m sure that the next exciting installment will see all four fourths of wbw being charming, funny and interesting. hope you like it

these are the voyages...

We’ve had a fairly good start to the year creatively speaking. a couple of great new songs that we’re happily working on. unfortunately our decision to apparently ditch practically all of our previous work has left us with less than half a set of songs that are not gig-ready yet. and i really want to play a gig or two. or more. i miss it. the excitement of stepping in front of a nearly empty room and just playing the songs rather than having to think about them gives me a buzz. nerves, adrenalin, excitement, sweat and sometimes blood and tears. better (and longer-lasting) than sex. our momentum is hard to keep up - we haven’t managed to have regular weekly rehearsals but we are making more use of our time in the studio spending less time dicking around or trying to remember what we did last time. hopefully we can get together some more new songs and get a couple of gigs in for the summer as well as recording them and sharing them.

JM has demanded in his diva fashion that we pluck an old song of mine from the ground to use. I demo’d this particular track about 5 years ago, having never intended it to be a WBW track and this now presents a bit of a problem for me: I already know what this song sounds like. The musicianship on the demo i recorded isn’t amazing but the way i played all the instruments is how i think the song should sound. And it will sound different when WBW pay it. I don’t know how to feel about it as i get a bit precious about some of the songs I write, especially if I have recorded them and really don’t like it when they don’t sound how I had already set out. But it will be great to play it with a band.

AC

Back to Rehearsing: Back To Reality

We’re already close to matching our rehearsal level for the whole of 2011 and we’re not even out of January! our second rehearsal of the year this weekend is almost here and i am ridiculously excited about playing with the rest of wbw again. JM’s head is about to explode with all sorts of ideas and theories about the band which will be interesting to hear! we’ll hopefully nail down our newest songs and maybe even start tossing around some new ideas. I’m already plotting our next recordings and I’m leaning heavily towards a more live feel, recording us all in the same room playing together rather than us all doing our parts individually, weeks apart from each other. on our last ep, we were never all present on any of the recording sessions! this new approach means we have to get super tight and know the songs inside out and upside down and be able to play them as perfectly as possible. i might try to convince the band that we should also record the couple of older songs we used to play to test out the recording methods and also to have a document of them. Whatever, I hope that we’ll get our next release to you rather more quickly than the last one!

AC

*Gatecrash* Hello, JM here. Adding a bit more onto the end of this post (and that pic of AC at the top haha). The idea I’m putting forward is that WBW stick to these three simple rules when writing our next few songs. They are:

1) No songs without shouting
2) No choruses without more than one person singing
3) No song over 3 minutes

Sounds good dunnit? No? Well you’ll see. You’ll all see. Toodlepip.

Escape / Erase on Bandcamp

At Last! our second release, Escape/Erase is up on our Bandcamp http://worldbeforewireless.bandcamp.com/album/escape-erase-ep . Its only taken forever!I could have tinkered with it forever (and Jamie would’ve made me) but it is time to let go of it. We had thought about dumping these recordings at one point but instead of going back to start them from scratch, we decided to get on with some exciting new things.

So, here we have Escape/Erase. the title track was born from one of Jamie’s riffs and we built upon it very quickly. its also one of my favourite guitar solos that I’ve done even though its very cheesy. Wonder if this track will be “annoyingly upbeat” as one reviewer described Distant Signal from our first EP?

Next up is Setting Fires. this was one of my ideas that I had very particular ideas about. It was informed by the amazing Northern Irish band In Case Of Fire. As I could only come up with lyrics for the chorus, Jamie stepped up and provided some great lyrics for the verses. when we nail this in rehearsal, it sounds even better live!

Borken Boy is the third and final track and is one that I actually recorded an acoustic version of and it appeared on my own EP a year ago. However, the WBW version really brings it all to life.

The recording process felt truly epic, spanning more than a year (but surprisingly only encompassing about half a dozen recording sessions) and ended up with us picking at it too much. In the end though, we didn’t do too many overdubs and things leaving the recordings as raw as possible so it really does sound like us.

I hope you enjoy it and we’ll be back in the middle of next year with some new songs (maybe even a new recording or two!) and some gigs.

Wise indeed and WBW have tried to follow this advice. However, as we’ve been through more hiatuses than The Stone Roses, often you people - the great unwashed - dont’ get to see that we’re working hard behind the scenes, filming and recording practices, making demos and creating new songs. Myself (AC) and OW will be heading into a secret north london studio to lay down drums and some guitar for the four tracks we are aiming to release. Three of them are almost old to us now, even though we’ve only played them a handful of times, they were written around a year ago. The fourth though is a newer song which we’ve been tweaking bit by bit since the winter. I think that track is going to be transitional for us; it embraces bits of everything we have done before and what we’ll sound like in the future too. It’s a bit post-rock, a bit grunge-y and a bit 70’s sounding where we go all Fleetwood Mac for a bit with vocals that are love-worn weariness but with strength and hope, albeit tinged with sadness… or something. Actually, that is probably the worst description of it i could come up with. Anyhow once we get this first session done, i hope that it will only require two more recording days to finish the guitars, lay down some bass and then work really hard on the vocals. We can’t wait to get it done!

Are we nearly there yet?

June is nearly over and we’re yet to get into the studio to record our second EP. We’ve all been so busy in our non-WBW lives this year, as well as the huge effort we put into being a-ha for a night. but we are determined to get recording in the next couple of weeks. So i’ll be soldering cables and re-stringing my guitars for the occasion. Hoping that the results will be what i have in my head - clean and powerful, uncluttered and crisp. With any luck, we should have the results for you to hopefully enjoy sooner rather than later. Then i’ll be off to get wed before we get back together to play a couple of shows. Busy times ahead!
